Episode 18 - The Best Spots For Family Campers

August 2nd, 2008 · No Comments

When the whole family goes camping, safety must have priority, with fun coming second. So even though one member would love to venture into that steep and rugged wilderness so they can go fishing or hunting on their camping trip, it would not be the safest spot to camp with a toddler. Nor perhaps with an older family member whose legs are not as steady as they once were.

There are still many beautiful wilderness spots that are suitable for family camping. Some open-range wildlife parks have guided tours and also provide bicycles to aid in getting around. These are ideal for the younger members of the family. Golf buggies may be hired for those members who are not into cycling. True wilderness areas will not have bicycles, but may still provide guided tours. These are great because if you are not familiar with an area, you can waste valuable time looking for the things you want to see.

You may like to go to a camping area where there are planned activities for both children and adults. This will take the pressure off you to provide entertaining activities for all the age groups in your family. You will know that the children are safe for a few hours while you pursue your own agenda for the afternoon.

Wherever you decide to go camping, find out first what the terrain is like. If it’s steep and rugged, with the campsite next door to a tumbling ravine or waterfall, you may decide to change your mind. Flat ground will be best for the very young and the very old. Water is lovely to camp next to, but a lake with a sandy beach or a meandering stream is preferable to a rushing torrent.

If you want to include swimming as an activity on your camping trip, then a lake with lots of shallow water is ideal for smaller children. Douthat State Park, Millboro, Va; Myrtle Beach State Park, SC; Verona Beach State Park, Verona, NY and Shoal Bay Campground, Dardanelle Lake, Ark are considered to be some of the best kid-friendly camping spots.

If you are unsure of an actual camping trip with all the family, try a one-day picnic in the great outdoors to see how it all goes. Some top picnic spots are Devil’s Lake State Park, Baraboo, Wisc; Pokegama Dam Recreational Area, Grand Rapids, Minn; Oconee State Park, Mountain Rest, SC; and Patrick’s Point State Park, Trinidad, Calif.

That’s it for our Family Camping article about finding the best spot for your family camping.
